When consumers and industry-watchers first laid eyes on Nokia’s radical Prism range of mobile handsets, it divided opinion between those who hated it and those who just couldn’t get enough. In my personal opinion, I thought that the 7500 (which was the first of the range to be launched) was too expensive and far too basic in terms of its features to ever be considered as anything other than a novelty.

With the 7900 Nokia have taken some steps to making it a more appealing proposition. The glossy-plastics on the front are of a much-better quality than before and feel a lot more solid. The only reservation I have is when glossy materials are used it usually means that fingerprints are inevitable and on this occasion it’s no different. More noticeable however is how slippery this makes the phone, something that didn’t seem to be a problem with the earlier 7500. What Nokia give with one hand, they take away with the other.

The same unique diamond-style keypad still remains and is very nice to look at, but all of the keys seem to be a lot flatter than before making typing more difficult than I found in the 7500.

In terms of new features, the main attractions will be 3G for both video-calls and data transfers and a new OLED display, which will surely make the 7900 look like a better option than the 7500 ever did.

A new display feature bizarrely titled “living wallpaper” is now being utilised, which basically means the backlighting which comes through the keypad changes dependent on the time of day, battery life and signal strength. First impressions relating to the effect that this has on the battery life are good, but this may change once it’s in use for more than a few weeks.

Sadly the same 2MP camera module that we had in the 7500 is still present and shows no signs of tweaking and/or adjustment in any way. Considering the quality of the display, a 3MP offering would help to sell the 7900 Prism a lot more.

A major issue that is worth pointing out is regarding the memory available. As there is no slot for a memory card, a set amount of 1GB has been included, but regardless this really is a major oversight considering that the inferior 7500 does have a card slot and supports card capacity up to 2GB.

Even though the 7900 is an excellent looking handset with an impressive display and bold design, the lacklustre capabilities make it doubly disappointing. The lack of a memory card slot, mediocre camera and slipperiness of the materials used in construction mean its frankly a poor offering and is probably more of a let-down than the 7500, which trust me, is saying a lot.

With the 6300, Nokia made their first proper entry into the burgeoning slim-phone market and it has been very well-received. Its attractive, yet conservative design, makes it the ideal successor to the incredibly popular 6230i, which will go a long way to justifying its existence. With a minor upgrade (the 6301) on the way, it’s perhaps time to see how the 6300 stands up to its current rivals.

The first thing worth mentioning is the build-quality, which is very good due to the solid materials used in construction. Stainless-steel coats the back cover and the whole of the keypad making it an eye-catching mobile, though the (inevitable?) use of glossy materials mean that fingerprints are unavoidable. The glossy plastics on the screen and the back of the phone by the camera lens recess are by far the worst culprits.

One aspect that Nokia mobiles are known for is the quality of their keypads, which in the case of the 6300 doesn’t waver. Though the keys are possibly a little too flat, in practise they’re as easy to use as its not-so-distant relative the 6230i. A slight degree of elevation on the keys would have been welcome to make the feedback even better, but this surely would have spoiled the streamlined look of the phone, so you can forgive it for that. Above the main keypad, you get the usual 4-way D-pad with a central ‘confirm’ button, two soft-keys and the 2 call buttons.

Though the 6300 never aspires to be an all-in-one solution, the features available make it very competitive in its price-sector. The connectivity options are basic, as you only get EGDE, Bluetooth and a Mini USB connector.

The 2MP camera also strives to be ordinary as well, as it doesn’t come with either a flash or autofocus. The lack of flash in particular reduces its effectiveness somewhat, meaning you’ll only likely to get decent photos indoors with plenty of light, or outside during the daytime.

Surprisingly, the music features merit a mention in this article. The music player is the same as the excellent version we saw in the 5300 Xpress Music phone and if you decide to use this phone on that basis you will not be disappointed. Memory is also expandable up to 2GB as well, so the 6300 can realistically be used as a basic music phone. Useful for long journeys, which as this phone was designed for the business market, was probably the intention.

Unfortunately one flaw that needs mentioning is the quality of the earpiece. There have been a number of reports of users noticing rapid deterioration on the earpiece over a few months after purchase and some new models have been known to experience the same issue as well.

Even though it may be usurped by the imminent release of the Wi-Fi enabled 6301, the Nokia 6300 shows itself to be a capable handset with a good combination of build-quality and looks, at a very reasonable price. The low price is sure to mean that the 6300 will continue to sell in the same numbers it has managed so far. Though the susceptibility to fingerprints, common issues with the earpiece and mediocre camera may put off some, remember that the 6300 isn’t meant to be perfect; it’s just a capable product that offers good value for money. If you simply want a good quality phone, with no particular bells or whistles, then this is a very good option. The fact that multiple colours are now available should only add to its appeal.

The Nokia 6300 Silver is also available in White and Red.

Further to the short video demo that I uploaded yesterday, here is the point by point analysis of the phone. I hope you enjoy it.

Phone Hardware

1. Samsung has clearly taken the pole position in the phone-camera category. In a short span of months, Samsung has pushed out her second 8 megapixals (MP) camera – Samsung M8800 PIXON after i8510 INNOV8. Clearly, no other phones except LG perhaps can come close to Samsung in this area. PIXON is the slimmest phone with a 8 megapixals resolution, a record previously held by LG RENOIR KC910 (a successor to LG KC990 VIEWTY).

2. PIXON is a 3.2 inch touchscreen phone but it’s not the first touchscreen phone launched by Samsung. However unlike OMNIA, M8800 PIXON is not a windows mobile phone. It is also not using Symbian OS which is the OS for INNOV8. Instead, it uses Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz interface (I’ll touch more about the phone OS and applications in the later section)

3. Let’s talk about the camera feature first since this is the key USP for PIXON. The new PIXON is equipped with the core functions that you will find on any Samsung’s low end point and shoot range camera. PIXON’s camera features include auto-focus, 16x digital zoom (which, to me, is pretty useless if you want a high quality shoot. Optical zoom will be much more important), fast-shutter and face detection. And of course, being a phone, it provides the geo-tagging function and easy uploading via the mobile internet.

4. It’s natural that that we compare PIXON to LG RENOIR since both have 8MP camera. While I have not tested LG RENOIR, I learnt from third party sources that RENOIR uses Schneider-Kreuznach lens and Xenon flash. PIXON on the other hand uses plastic lens and dual LED flash. In addition, RENOIR has active autofocus whereas PIXON uses passive autofocus. But the report also commented that camera speed-wise, PIXON has an edge over RENOIR and PIXON has a more friendly user-interface. (http://technorati.com/posts/OpbBYGK7SrgKE3pAz_SSxWJrJcNHyvOX4y9G993i3j0%3D).

5. Putting aside the camera feature, I tend to compare this to Nokia XpressMusic 5800 as well. Both are very lightweight (PIXON 121g and Nokia 109g). Both have long battery life with Nokia winning by a slight margin (Samsung has talktime of upto 3 hours and 40 minutes and standby of 290 hours; Nokia has talktime of up to 4 hours and standby of upto 300hours). However, unlike Nokia, Samsung has only 256k colors. Nokia 5800 by contrast, supports 16m colors.

6. Some other similar features are the accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and full virtual Qwerty keyboard and built-in GPS. PIXON uses Google Maps whereas Nokia has its own Nokia MAPS (which requires a subscription). However, Google maps is free and to me Google maps serves my purpose as I don’t need a turn by turn voice navigation.

7. Samsung PIXON also uses a resistive screen and as mentioned in my earlier post on Nokia XpressMusic 5800, I am not very used to the “touch” on resistive screen. It requires you to exert pressure on the screen to scroll down. It requires more deliberate efforts to scroll than the multi-touch capacitive screen on iPhone.

8. PIXON uses proprietary headset jack. But all is not lost. You are able to connect a 3.5mm normal earphone to the connector provided by Samsung. The only thing is you can’t afford to lose this connector. In addition, the phone also has the ability to do TV out. You have to purchase the accessories separately.

9. PIXON has an internal storage of 200M (much larger than Nokia 5800’s) and similar to most phones today it has an expandable memory slot using microSD card.

10. In terms of its speakers’ quality, Samsung included its own SRS (surround sound system). By comparison, I feel that Nokia 5800 is a cut above Samsung when I play the same song using the speakers. The music player also boosts some presets (in total 8 of them). However, unlike Nokia’s XpressMusic, you can’t change the presets to customise your own. (More about this in the later section)

11. While PIXON has a 3.2 inch screen, its browser is not friendly. You can’t open several tabs at one go. And because it has resistive screen, it is not using to navigate with fingers as you need to press against the screen as you move around on a web page. But what I like about the phone is that you can zoom in and out by using the volume up/down button or to use the virtual buttons on the screen. Both are easy to control. I don’t’ encourage you to buy the phone if you intend to browse a lot. Besides the less-friendly browser and browsing capability, PIXON does NOT support WiFi. WiFi is important for me because I tend to put my phone on WiFi when I’m at home or in the office so that I don’t have to pay for cellular data charges. PIXON is not the right phone for web-browsing. iPhone or G1 are clearly far better choices.

12. Last but not least, PIXON has several physical buttons to provide one-click access. It has 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen. The left and right buttons are self-explanatory (making and ending calls / power switch). The middle button is NOT a home or menu button. Rather it is a “Back” button. I had thought it would be easier to have a Menu button but Samsung has designed the Menu button as a virtual button (read on to find out). On one side of the phones are the camera button and the volume buttons (which can act as zoom in/out and and scroll up /down depending on the application that you are running). On the other side of the phone are the hold button and a menu button that provides a virtual menu for quick access to “call”, “music player”, “messages”, “browser”, “main menu” and back.

Phone OS and Applications

1. As mentioned earlier, the phone uses TouchWiz OS. It has several widgets on the home screen that you can pull out from the side of the screen to the main screen. Some neat widgets include Google Search, Weather Channel, Favourite Contacts, Photo Album, Music Player and others that are already pre-installed on the phone and many more that can be downloaded from Samsung FunClub website.

2. Pixon’s organizer application comes with some handy tools such as Calendar, Memo, Task, World Clock, Calculator and Converter.

3. For the music player, the interface is very friendly and easy to use. You can set any piece as voice or video call ringtone or caller ringtone. You have the option to decide whether to allow background music playing. It has an additional feature similar to the Shazam. PIXON has this application called the “Music Recognition”. It will try to identify the song that you are playing. I have not tried out too many songs (in fact, only a few), hence it’s not fair for me to comment on the accuracy. So far it recognizes most of the songs I bought from iTunes. Between the two phones, I’ll recommend Nokia XpressMusic 5800 over Samsung PIXON for music not just because Nokia 5800 has better music player features and speakers but also because Nokia is targeting squarely at the iTunes market with the music store via its Come with Music service.

4. Nowadays most phones have both music and video players. Given the 3.2 inch screen size, it’s comfortable to play a video or movie on it. What’s neat about the video player is that you can choose to upload to web or to send via email/MMS or Bluetooth (same for music) and even add tags to it (only for videos). You can view the video in either portrait or landscape mode.

5. In addition, PIXON has this Video Editor application that allows you to insert one video track and two audio tracks. You can choose 176×144 or 320×240 for the resolution settings. You can choose from 5 different effects (Emboss, Black&White, Sepia, Solarise, Sharpen) to apply on the video. Interesting tool for you to make your own little impromptu video.

6. Just to also mention that the phone has a voice recorder application but it can only record up to a maximum of 60 minutes. I thought if Samsung really wanted this to be a “fun phone” for photo-taking and video editing, it should perhaps include some effects to make some tweaks to the voice. What you can do for video editing is only to trim the length.

7. Don’t bang on this phone too much for games. PIXON has some pre-installed games (mostly for trial only). It doesn’t have the depth and breadth of an iPhone appstore.

9. The phone can be used easily for mass storage. It has a Documents Viewer application that allows you to open Microsoft Office (only 2003 and not 2007) documents. This is a pleasant surprise to me. I have tested it out on a few powerpoint files (since I tend to deal a lot with powerpoint files). You can view in portrait or landscape mode. And more surprisingly it has a Search Function. This means I can go to certain particular slide easily if I can remember the keywords in that slide. The viewer has a zoom function too.

10. Okay, I just want to say that this phone is not cut out to support heavy duty email. Of course, PIXON is never provided for that. It can support POP3 or IMAP. I have tried setting up using IMAP. I realised that it seems slow in processing my emails. There is also a limit on the size of the file that you can download. Only up to 5Mb. Most powerpoint file that I receive tends to be bigger than 5Mb. So this is practically of no use to me. If you just want simple text reading, this phone serves the purpose. If you read my earlier post on Nokia 5800, I mentioned that Nokia 5800 supports Mail For Exchange which allows synchronisation of Inbox, Calendar and Tasks. For PIXON, only basic email function is supported.

11. What I find strange is that Samsung includes ShoZu for MobileBlog (which also allows you to upload your photo to ShoZu). I thought it would be more useful to include a Flickr or Facebook application since this is primary a camera phone. But then again, Samsung may want to encourage people to do micro-blogging and hence ShoZu application will fit the bill.

12. PIXON has a Photo Album application that uses its built-in accelerometer sensor. Not only does it auto-rotate the screen when you change the orientation of the phone, it also allows you to advance back and forth easily by tilting the phone. Cool way to view hundreds of photos quickly.

13. There is another neat thing I like about this phone. At times, we may send a sms to the wrong party. This phone has this “precautionary” feature built in by requiring you to click the “Done” virtual button so that you can preview your entire message again before sending out. In addition, when you type your message, the textbox is enlarged so that you can view your draft message easily. You can choose to use the normal phone keypad or handwritten (using the stylus) mode or the virtual Qwerty keyboard. However, I somehow feel that it is a little slower than most phones in sending out the messages. Not sure if it’s because it has the dialog box that shows “Sending” and hence the perception that it’s taking a bit longer.

14. Lastly, I just want to say that this phone supports RSS. This means you can import your favourite feeds into the phone easily. That’s something I must have for all phones. Feeds are my daily needs.

So in summary, I would say that if you are looking for a phone that can double up as a proper camera and have decent music and video players. This is the phone to go for. It has long battery life. This is important for taking photos and playing videos. Plus with the light weight, I really won’t mind carrying one more gadget with me.

This brand new N series phone model of Nokia can be considered as an update from the Nokia N93. Due to a lot of complaints that emerged from initial users of the Nokia N93, the release of N93i will hopefully help to calm these complaints.

A major difference that can be easily spotted is the new design. The N93 contains the common keypads of Nokia cell phones as compared to the metallic version of N93i. This type of keypad was first seen with the RAZR phones of Motorola and it seems that Nokia has found their own way of incorporating this stylish look into their mobile phones. There’s also a unique flipping style that the Nokia N93i is also capable of.

Nokia N93i Review One of the common complaints against the N93 is its weight. It seems Nokia listened to this complaints and did something about it. Unlike N93, this new version is lighter. It weighs about 160 grams, including the battery. It is a 17g less than the N93 and it is also thinner.

Another update that can be found in this phone is the sixteen million colored internal display. This is quite an increase from the 256K that N93 has to offer. This is definately a welcomed improvement.

The majority of the features of N93 are still intact in the new N93i. These features include the 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera with 3x optical zoom that allows you to take great pictures.

With regard to its memory, it is almost the same with the N93. These phones both have 50MB internal memory. The difference is that the upcoming N93i comes with a bigger SD card. Compared with the 128MB card of N93, N93i comes with a whopping 1GB miniSD card.

However, the downside of N93i is the very short battery life, which is a common problem ofNokia N93i Review some mobile phones these days. Standby time approximately lasts up to 280 hours and around 4 hours for talk time. It is expected for this phone not to last long because of a smaller Li – Ion battery size. This could be one of the reasons why this new model is lighter compared to N93.

Compared to N93, N93i’s battery is only 950mAh against 1100mAh of N93. Nokia could consider this as a drastic move because a lot of consumers are not really happy with the 1100mAh and with what they did, they only make things worse. Cell phone manufacturers should attend to this battery life issue because a lot of consumers are not really happy about it. Some of them would say that there is no point of having a lot of features in a mobile phone if it can’t last long.

Aside from these small changes with the features, it is almost identical to N93. Most of the previous configurations for N93 were kept with N93i.

These are just some of the initial findings in the upcoming Nokia N93i. With its release by the first quarter of this year, there could be more reviews, both positive and negative, for this mobile phone.

Nokia 6500 Review

Just made commercially available, the Nokia 6500 classic is a sight for the sore eyes of thousands of slim-phone lovers, who had been quivering with anticipation. The new addition to the Nokia Series 40 team had us equally impatient to see what it’s capable of. The Nokia 6500 classic is slim, but not enough to slip our scrutiny. So, sit back as we put this thin gadget through its paces.

Key features
Very sleek and slim
1 GB of internal memory
Great 16M color QVGA display
Snappy user interface
3G network support
Rich preloaded content
Bluetooth with A2DP support

Main disadvantages: No microSD card slot
No FM radio
No video calls, not even with the main camera
Prone to fingerprints
Mediocre camera
Uncomfortable keypad

If you expected miracles from the Nokia 6500 classic box you might end up disappointed. In the slim (what else?) retail package we found a charger, a wired handsfree and a microUSB cable. A miniUSB obviously would’ve been too large for the slim body, hence the not-so-popular microUSB format is used. Not that this will bother anyone, as the cable can be easily carried along if needed that badly. Leaving that aside, the box reveals a CD with the required PC sync software, a manual and, finally, a quick start guide.

With the deservingly warm welcomed Nokia 6300, it seemed the legendary Nokia 6230 had finally found its rightful successor. As time passed however, the slim Finn was having harder and harder time standing its ground to a growing number of rivals. Now Nokia is throwing another super thin phone in the battle and it seems to be a worthy reinforcement. Armed with 1 GB of onboard memory and design that simply cannot go unnoticed, Nokia 6500 classic surely deserves attention. So, let us give it all of ours.
Sleek slim

If you thought Nokia and thin simply cannot go together, then it’s about time you reconsidered. Nokia 6500 classic is as thin as 9.5mm, which just makes it the slimmest Nokia to date. There are very few handsets from the competition, that can beat it, as well. Well, the sole existence of Samsung U100 is enough to compel humility in any slim handset, but that’s another story. Anyway, Nokia 6500 classic is truly adorable for its stunning design and slim body.

Nokia 6500 classic comes in two color versions – black and bronze – and both do the handset justice in our opinion. Both color versions look much better than Nokia 6300 but, as you know, there is nothing more subjective than taste, so everyone should judge for themselves. In any case, the almost completely smooth sides of the handset benefit the design tremendously. There are no controls, and even splits between panels are hardly noticeable. In terms of dimensions, besides the already mentioned inspiring 9.5 mm thickness, the Nokia 6500 measures 109.8 mm in height and 45 mm in width – both falling within the golden mean.

Examining the handset’s body, one thing is strikingly noticeable: the absence of quite a few controls that we’re used to seeing in mobile phones. But, one thing at a time, let’s now start with the face of Nokia 6500 classic – the front panel. The earpiece is placed at the top, dead center, with the 2″ display right under it. The display itself is of praiseworthy quality but we’ll come back to that later in our review. Let us now pay due respect to the keypad. A few things ought to be mentioned here. Beginning with the good news, we have to say that the D-pad is among the best we have ever touched. Not so with the rest of the keypad though – the keys are far too tightly packed and may prove quite a trial for users with larger fingers.

Furthermore, the alphanumeric keys are utterly flat, with only a thin metal ridge marking the end of each row. It doesn’t do touch orientation any good, so typing without looking at the keypad is nearly impossible with this handset.

SPRAVKA.UA – ??????-??????? ??????? ? ????? ???????

Certainly we will difficult to choose which one, but certainly have similarity and the most same features is a large screen (support touch screen). And, this is the latest Nokia smartphone claimed to able to meet all user needs and desires at this time. With the full feature and high class, the design and user interface is attractive.
